UFCW Canada Local 1000A was proud to participate in the International Day of Pink on April 13, 2016!
Union members, staff and executive joined in taking a stand against bullying, discrimination, homophobia and transphobia in our schools, workplaces and communities by participating.
I am pleased to announce UFCW Canada Local 1000A members have voted 87 per cent in favour of a historic merger with UFCW Canada Local 206, leading to the creation of our new local union, UFCW Canada Local 1006A.
The membership also voted 85 per cent in favour of local union bylaw amendments, which expanded the executive board.
The votes took place at membership meetings from March 29 to April 6, 2016 in 29 cities across Ontario and were open to all Local 1000A members. Members had the opportunity to hear a presentation, participate and vote at these meetings.
Following final approval by the International Union, the membership’s approval of the agreement creates a new UFCW Canada local union effective May 1, 2016.
This historic merger is a win-win for the memberships of our two great local unions.
A merger brings additional strength, stability and resources and support when we take on employers at the bargaining table or advocate on issues of importance to our members.
Under clear blue skies, hundreds flocked to Boyd Conservation Area in Vaughan on August 7, 2010 for Local 1000A's fourth and final Community Action Network (CAN) BBQ picnic of the year. Members from Toronto and the surrounding areas brought their families and friends to the day-long event which featured several activities including soccer, an iron-chef cooking contest, a jumping castle, face-painting, balloon toss, potato sack races, bingo and an all-you-can-eat BBQ.
Members and their families, from the Ottawa area, turned out in full force for Local 1000A’s first Community Action Network (CAN) BBQ picnic on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Ottawa’s Vincent Massey Park. Despite the rain, the event brought together people of all ages and cultures for a family day of food, fun and activities.
“Our members work hard to provide for their families and oftentimes, it means they are not able to spend as much time as they like with their loved ones,” said Tony Soares, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 1000A and chair of the network. “This event is about giving back to our members by providing them with a fun-filled day where they can simply relax and be with those they love.”
